I was a 62 year old in excellent health (ran a 10k in July 2015) -- nonsmoker, moderate drinker, no history of acid reflux -- when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 distal esophageal cancer in March of 2016 after having trouble swallowing. I had 28 rounds of Radiation and 6 chemo treatments over the following 6 weeks. I had surgery to remove my esophagus in June of 2016. I then had another 18 weeks of chemo -- one day of IV and two weeks of pills in three week cycles. I had a clear PET scan in December 2016. All treatment was done at Anmed in Anderson SC. I had a follow up in March and have a CT scan scheduled in June. Sounds like some form of evaluation every 3 - 6 months for the next 3 years. I have struggled to maintain my weight since March as I have gotten back to fairly normal activities -- golf, projects around the house, time with our 5 kids and 15 grandkids, work at the church. I have tried several different methods to help me get enough calories and am still experimenting. My wife, God bless her, is trying hard to balance nutrition with calories. At 170 when diagnosed and 145 now I need to gain weight. Given that is my only real challenge, I am thankful to God for every day. If I can help someone get through this I would be happy to assist.
