Diagnosed in Feb 2011 following difficulty swallowing. (Sound familiar?) This was my second cancer having been diagnosed with CLL in Jan of 2004 so I already had an oncologist. First protocol was one week of self administered chemo. ( Wearing the pack) followed by two or three weeks of radiation and then the surgery. I was not going to accept that. I went to Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC and met with Drs Ilson and Baines. They wrote the book on EC. Ilson was the oncologist and Baines the surgeon. Upon glancing at the documents we brought with us to discuss my treatment, they dismissed them because they had wrote them and hadn't used them in twenty years. So, needless to say, I stuck with these two and they saved me. five weeks of chemo, a break and another PET scan then another five weeks combined with daily radiation at Yale/Smilow Cancer Hospital. Two months to cool off and the first follow up, a biopsy and CT scan. Negative! Subsequent follow ups and NED....No Evidence of Disease! I go for one in April of 2014 and if all goes well (and it must) then April 2015 and I have my five years out. I still watch the Leukemia though. As a result of this experience I began a 501-c-3 non profit called Sails Up 4 Cancer. If you care to browse my website it's www.su4c.org God Bless you all out there and I'd be happy to answer any and all questions.
