I was diagnosed at age 44 without any prior history of reflux or heartburn. After some months of difficulty swallowing I went to the ER with an upper GI bleed, had surgery within two weeks and then a clinical trial of concurrent chemo and radiation. I have been extremely fortunate to remain cancer free, to have continued to work full time (except for six months post surgery while getting chemo). Ten years post treatment I was diagnosed with Barretts esophagus in the remainder of the esophagus and was treated with a series of ablations. Post treatment dietary challenges have kept life interesting, but have not gotten in the way of doing what I really want to do. My children were 7, 9 and 18 at the time of diagnosis and I am extremely grateful to see them graduate high school and either graduate or continue in higher education.
